8일 美 캘리포니아 덮친 산불이 수그러들 기미를 보이지 않고 있다.

12일(현지시간) 미 현지 언론에 따르면 캘리포니아주에서는 지난 8일부터 캠프파이어(북부 뷰트카운티), 울시파이어(남부 말리부 주변), 힐파이어(남부 벤투라 카운티) 등에서 대형 산불 3개가 발화해 닷새째인 이날까지 서울시 면적(605㎢)보다 넓은 840㎢ 이상의 산림과 시가지를 태우고 있다.

산불 진화율은 여전히 25%대에 머무르고 있다. 여전히 습도 5% 미만의 바짝 마른 수풀이 불쏘시개 역할을 하는 데다 내주 초까지는 비가 올 기미가 전혀 없는 것으로 알려졌다. 이번 산불을 완전히 진압하는 데 3주가 걸릴 것으로 예상하고 있다.

산불이 지나간 자리는 폐허로 변해 마치 재난영화를 방불케 했다. 현재 캠프파이어로 숨진 주민은 29명으로 캘리포니아 산림소방국(캘파이어)이 집계한 주 재난 역사상 단일 산불이 초래한 인명 피해로는 85년 만에 최대 규모다. 북부와 남부 캘리포니아를 더한 사망자 수는 31명이다.
