Soccer doesn't enjoy the same attention in America as it does in many other countries worldwide. American football, baseball, basketball, and ice hockey-with their loyal fan bases-make it difficult for soccer to compete in the same market. However, after taking second place in the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa, US soccer may have earned some much deserved support. The US finished second only to the powerful Brazilians, who captured the top prize on June 28th, 2009.

The US, which has displayed strength in many sports, just needed some time before its soccer program was rounded into shape. To date, the US has been to the World Cup nine times but hasn't obtained any significant results. Furthermore, the US club had suffered a thirty-two year World Cup drought. After participating in the 1954(Switzerland) World Cup, it wasn't until 1986(Mexico) that the US team qualified for the FIFA World Cup again. Things could be looking up, however, Team USA defeated Spain in this year's Confederations Cup, a team that hasn't been defeated in thirty-five straight matches and holds the number one position in FIFA's world rankings. The US club has exhibited strong defense, a fast counterattack, good organization, and an intense work ethic that at times sacrifices the body. The US team is anxiously looking forward to South Africa 2010, where it tries to build on this year's experience and success.

The success of the Americans has not gone unnoticed and other teams such as South Korea are anxious to follow the example set by the US. Head coach Huh Jung-Moo, who was present at the final match in Johannesburg, said the game was meaningful. "Performances like this will encourage weaker teams, and give them the confidence needed to play against any opponent."

미국 축구가 화제다. 미식축구, 야구, 농구, 아이스하키 등에 밀려 자국에서 변변한 대접을 받지 못하는 미국 축구가 지난달 29일 끝난 2009 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 컨페더레이션스컵에서 브라질에 이어 준우승을 차지하자 축구팬들의 관심이 미국 축구로 쏠리고 있다.

대부분의 스포츠 종목에서 강세를 보이는 미국이지만 축구에서만은 철저히 변방 신세였다. 지금까지 월드컵에 9번 출전했지만 눈에 띄는 성적을 거두지 못했다. 더욱이 1954년 스위스 월드컵에서 1986년 멕시코 월드컵까지 무려 32년 동안 예선 탈락의 고배를 마셨다. 하지만 미국은 이번 대회에서 A매치 35경기 무패 행진으로 FIFA 랭킹 1위인 스페인을 침몰시켰고, 브라질과의 결승에서도 알찬 전력을 자랑하며 미국 축구의 존재감을 확실히 각인시켰다. 탄탄한 수비력과 빠른 역습, 몸을 사리지 않은 허슬 플레이에다 조직력까지 갖췄다는 평가다.

미국 축구 대표팀의 선전은 국내 대표팀에게도 시사점을 던져 준다. 현재는 약체로 분류되지만 어떻게 준비하느냐에 따라 내년 월드컵에서 이변의 주인공이 될 수 있다는 희망을 주기에 충분한 것이다. 조만간 월드컵 본선 진출국 가운데 전력이 처지는 팀들 사이에 미국 축구 배우기 열풍이 일 가능성도 없지 않다는 분석이다.

현지에서 결승전을 관전한 허정무 국가대표 감독은 "약체로 분류됐던 팀들도 (강팀과) 대등한 경기를 할 수 있다는 자신감을 심어준 계기가 되기에 충분하다"고 미국의 선전에 의미를 부여했다.
