The maritime monitoring radars for Dok-do were recently replaced with Korean models. STX Engine, a well-known manufacturing company producing heavy equipment such as ships, tanks, and planes, announced on August 17 that all of the existing Japanese-made radars were replaced with better performing domestic models.

STX Engine replaced the two Japanese radars, which were installed in 1996 and 1999, with a newer model, the GPS-98K. It was invented by STX Engine, a renowned radar manufacturer, in 2005. STX Engine has been manufacturing maritime monitoring radars since 1999. The company is responsible for the monitoring duties of the army and navy, as well they manufacture the warship radar SPS-95K and the nautical radar SPS-100K.

"We're focusing on researching and inventing monitoring radars, as the duty for watching the coast of Korea is highly important to national security since our country is surrounded by the ocean. We're expecting a large demand for existing radars to be replaced with ones made by STX Engine." said an STX Engine employee.

독도의 해상 감시용 레이더가 모두 국산으로 교체됐다. 선박·탱크·비행기 등 중장비 엔진 제조업체로 알려진 STX 엔진은 17일 독도에 설치되어 있던 일본산 해상 감시용 레이더를 성능과 기술면에서 뛰어난 국산으로 모두 교체했다고 밝혔다.

STX 엔진 측은 2005년 자체적으로 연구 개발한 해상 감시용 레이더(모델명 GPS-98K)로 일본산 레이더 1대(1996년 설치)를 바꾼 데 이어 이번에 나머지 한 대(1999년 설치)를 국내 제품 GPS-98K 레이더로 교체했다.

1999년부터 해상 감시용 레이더 생산을 시작한 이 회사는 육·해군의 해상 감시 임무를 지원하면서 함정용 SPS-95K 대함 레이더와 SPS-100K 항해 레이더 등 다양한 종류의 레이더를 생산 공급하는 등 우리나라 탐색 레이더 분야에서 독보적인 기술력을 보유하고 있다.

STX 엔진 관계자는 "3면이 바다로 둘러싸인 우리나라 해안 감시 임무는 국가안보와 직결되는 만큼 연구 개발에 기술력을 집중하고 있다"며 "향후 도서지역에서 운용 중인 기존 레이더를 STX엔진이 생산하는 레이더로 교체하는 수요도 발생할 것으로 기대하고 있다"고 밝혔다.
